02-03-10 IN CLASS WORK

Mark Bradford

I found it interesting that Mark Bradford developed into the artist that he did.  Although his work does reflect his upbringing, it does not seem politically bias to one side.  A strong opinion toward an opinion tends to ruin a piece for me but Bradford’s work illustrates his past and the conflicts related but not in a condescending way toward any group.  His contrasting videos of the MLK parade in LA and the Muslim-only section of Egypt can be studied for hours for deeper meanings.  The people are happy but polarized.  Having the videos in a small room on opposing sides would force a strong impression on a person.

Bradford’s advertisements works are creative and unique.  I would have liked to have learned about how he thought of the sanding ideas over the ads themselves.  He must have had some strong influences in his past other than the books he befriended.  His work won’t influence my own since we work in new mediums but I’d enjoy seeing his pieces in an exhibit.

Mcgee and Kilgallen

Mcgee and Kilgallen are the types of artists who I don’t mind seeing works by on the train.  They are creative and not kids simply defacing private property.  In fact, a few months ago,  I was looking for works like theirs for a photo shoot.  Good graffiti can make for a great background especially when shooting subjects of youth like in my case, surfers on land.  What else I found interesting is that they still tag in public instead of moving entirely to an indoors/legal canvas like how I’d assume most skilled artists would do.  I was hoping to hear them mention how many citations/arrests they had each and together.

Their work did not inspire me much,  both look at art in a different way than I do, I suppose.  What is more interesting is how they work, the scale  of their commissioned works and the risks they take in public.

Linda Zacks

Linda Zacks artistic style is especially interesting for me because she showcases her works in commercial pieces.  She’s illustrating how an artist can financially benefit while still expressing their own style.  They’re artistic hard work is being used as a visibly valuable part of society.  This is an important aspect of art, how to support one’s self with one’s abilities.  Linda Zacks does this with the support of major corperations such as Target and the Country Music Television channel.

Her style mainly appeals to younger audiences.  Grunge has always been a younger persons style since it’s early popularity within the music genre ‘Punk’ with artists such as the Sex Pistols covering their albums with very similar, although cruder, grunge artwork.   Her style incorporates the random appearing elements along with more sophisticated techniques that modern artists employ within computer software.  She sees the value of using several elements to cover a page almost entirely to make most efficiency of the ad space while still keeping the disorganized style intact.  This is a trait which I hope to learn, grudge is a style I hope to become proficient with and Linda Zacks works inspire me.

1000 Journals

What an interesting idea.

The creator of http://www.1000journals.com, ‘someguy’ came up with an idea that very few would pursue; requiring optimism and personal expense.  The fact that most of the books would be disposed of would make most persons dismiss the idea of sending out and randomly distributing a blank book in the hope that people would find it and then add their own input .  The internet allowed for this project to grow exponentially while keeping hope that more than a few books will be completed and returned.

I like the idea, especially after it took off on the internet.  My assumption was that 97% of the books will be thrown away even if found and read by persons not interested in the project.  My concern now is that the people who find it will add too much such as the last woman who wanted to fill the book herself.  That defeats the purpose of the book in my opinion.  The purpose of the book is to be anonymous and adding a small portion of yourself to a collective work.  If you’re filling out more than a few pages, get your own book.
